YouTube for iOS adds full screen support for the iPhone X users

The latest YouTube update allows you to get rid of that and use the screen fully, horns and all. You lose a bit from the top and the bottom of the video while the sides lose bits due to the notch and the rounded corners.

YouTube for iOS now supports full screen on the iPhone X

Go to youtube.com in Safari, play a video, and make it full screen. This will reveal the standard system video player controls. Here you can select the newly-added PIP button on an iPhone running iOS 14, and the video will pop out from the page. You can change tabs or navigate to different apps, and the video will keep running in the PIP.

If you own an iPhone X then soon you will be able to watch YouTube videos in full-screen mode with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. YouTube for iOS is receiving an update that adds full-screen viewing support for the iPhone X.

iPhone X, Apple's first edge-to-edge smartphone with a Super Retina display, was launched in September. iPhone X users, however, were not able to watch videos covering the entire screen, as YouTube, like most other video streaming sites, offers content in an 16:9 aspect ratio. Now, YouTube for iOS v12.43 gets a 'pinch to zoom' feature to switch to full-screen. As it crops content to a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, when viewing content in full-screen on the iPhone X some of the video will be cropped from the top and bottom as well as the notch. The update for YouTube for iOS is now available, and users can upgrade right away.

You can then swipe out of Safari and the floating window will follow you wherever you go, including your home screen and other applications. Use your fingers to move the floating window around the screen, and pinch in and out to resize it accordingly. If you tap on the floating window, you have options to fast-forward, rewind and play or pause the video, as well as maximize it to full-screen. To close the floating window, tap on the X icon on the top left of the window.

Thanks for responding back with those additional details. Do you get the fullscreen option in the bottom right corner when you play a video? This is described in detail here: Watch in full screen mode - YouTube Help. You may have to tap on the video one time to get it to appear.

Try playing a video on either Netflix.com or YouTube.com through Safari. Do you get a fullscreen option when you play videos there? Also, check to see if you have your screen orientation locked: Change or lock the screen orientation on iPhone. Unlock it if it appears locked when playing videos.

Once you've restored your iPhone, set it up as new and then test to see if you're able to view videos in fullscreen. After that, you can then restore your content back to your device using the steps here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. Test it again after you've restored from your backup.

The Fullscreen API has no interfaces of its own. Instead, it augments several other interfaces to add the methods, properties, and event handlers needed to provide fullscreen functionality. These are listed in the following sections.

Asks the user agent to place the specified element (and, by extension, its descendants) into fullscreen mode, removing all of the browser's UI elements as well as all other applications from the screen. Returns a Promise which is resolved once fullscreen mode has been activated.

The fullscreenElement property tells you the Element that's currently being displayed in fullscreen mode on the DOM (or shadow DOM). If this is null, the document (or shadow DOM) is not in fullscreen mode.

The fullscreenEnabled property tells you whether or not it is possible to engage fullscreen mode. This is false if fullscreen mode is not available for any reason (such as the "fullscreen" feature not being allowed, or fullscreen mode not being supported).

The Fullscreen API defines two events which can be used to detect when fullscreen mode is turned on and off, as well as when errors occur during the process of changing between fullscreen and windowed modes.

The availability of fullscreen mode can be controlled using a Permissions Policy. The fullscreen mode feature is identified by the string "fullscreen", with a default allowlist value of "self", meaning that fullscreen mode is permitted in top-level document contexts, as well as to nested browsing contexts loaded from the same origin as the top-most document.

Users can choose to exit fullscreen mode by pressing the ESC (or F11) key, rather than waiting for the site or app to programmatically do so. Make sure you provide, somewhere in your user interface, appropriate user interface elements that inform the user that this option is available to them.

This starts by looking at the value of the document's fullscreenElement attribute. In a real-world deployment, at this time, you'll want to check for prefixed versions of this (mozFullScreenElement, msFullscreenElement, or webkitFullscreenElement, for example). If the value is null, the document is currently in windowed mode, so we need to switch to fullscreen mode; otherwise, it's the element that's currently in fullscreen mode. Switching to fullscreen mode is done by calling Element.requestFullscreen() on the element.

The fullscreenEnabled property tells you whether or not it is possible to engage fullscreen mode. This is false if fullscreen mode is not available for any reason (such as the \"fullscreen\" feature not being allowed, or fullscreen mode not being supported).

This tip doesn't work on all websites. It works on relatively few. This tip is the only way to make Safari full screen on an iPad. It relies on web developers who have added a bit of code to the site, and most developers don't do that.

iOS 16 has been the biggest change to the iPhone lock screen in the past few years. It allows you to change and customize your clock, add widgets and even use the new depth effect to create a more aesthetic look. These design improvements also spill over to the music player which now occupies your full screen.

Your iPhone will remember your previous choice for the size of your lock screen music player the next time you launch the music app. So you can simply switch to the full screen music player when closing the app to use it by default on your iPhone.

1. launch another app in the background2. play video full screen or in PiP3. swipe up or double-tap to move to the other app4. browser will not force close the PiP window (tested on 14.5)Source
